Coflex® Procedures at Jackson Neurosurgery Clinic

In this surgical procedure, a titanium alloy device is implanted to relieve back pain or numbness in the legs or buttocks caused by spinal stenosis. This procedure is a non-fusion, minimally-invasive alternative to laminectomy with or without spinal fusion.

Anesthesia is administered and the patient is positioned. A small incision is made in the lower back.

Accessing the Spine

An opening is created through the ligaments at the rear of the spine. The surgeon can now access the spinous processes, the bony protrusions on the back of the spine, of the problem vertebrae.

Preparing the Implant Site

Some of the bony overgrowths of the spinous process may need to be removed for the implant to fit properly. A small portion of one or more lamina may also need to be resurfaced.

Implanting the CoflexTM

Using fluoroscopic guidance, the CoflexTM implant is inserted through the incision and placed between the spinous processes.

End of Procedure and Aftercare

In many cases, the patient will be able to return home the same day or after an overnight stay. The surgeon will determine the length of the hospital stay and will guide the post-operative recovery.

Spinal stenosis is no matter easily ignored. Jackson Neurosurgery is proud to bring the addition of coflex® solutions to the Jackson Metro area.

From coflex® solutions:

For the past 20 years, patients with moderate to severe spinal stenosis have been treated with a fusion technique that uses metal rods and screws, which eliminates motion in the spine after surgical decompression. However, the coflex® Interlaminar Stabilization procedure is a new, non-fusion solution that allows you to be able to do the things you love most! The coflex® device is a titanium metal implant that helps keep your spine stable after surgical decompression. The coflex® device also helps maintain the normal foraminal height and motion in your spine where the coflex® was implanted. It’s amazingly strong, yet simple, and flexible enough to support your spine without having to fuse your bones together.
