Opioids for Chronic Pain: Addiction Not Rare

Category: Uncategorized

In this video, Dr. Russell Portenoy, Dr. Nathaniel Katz, Dr. Thomas Kosten, and Dr. Andrew Kolodny with Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing (PROPS) explains some of the myths surrounding chronic opiate therapy.

These physicians also explain some of the events over the last two decades that have led up to the marked increase in prescribing opiate medications for chronic non-cancer pain.  Accompanying this increase is a sharp increase in opiate overdoses and accidental deaths.

Contrary to what physicians have been taught over the last 20 years, dependence disorders and addiction with chronic opiate medication is not an uncommon event.

At Jackson Neurosurgery Clinic, we strive to help our patients reduce and eliminate chronic opioid use by utilizing state of the art interventional pain management and neurosurgical options to help restore function as well as to provide relief from chronic pain.
